Qualification overview
This qualification forms part of the QA Manual Handling suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on:
- National Occupational Standards (NOS) related to the safe moving of people
- Recommendations of good practice outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
This qualification explains the principles and practice of safer handling of people and objects. It outlines the reasons for safer manual handling, the legal requirements, the process of completing risk assessments to reduce the risk of harm and the additional considerations if the load you are moving is a person. Learners will have the opportunity to practice the principles of safer handling of people and objects when using equipment, on their own and as part of a team. This qualification specification provides information for Centers about the delivery of the QA Level 2 Award in
Moving People Safely (RQF) and includes the unit information, assessment methods and quality assurance arrangements.
Structure
This qualification contains 2 mandatory units with a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 14 hours.
Learners must complete all assessments in both units successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 6 weeks. TQT is the total number of hours required for a Learner to achieve this qualification. It has 2 elements:
• Guided Learning Hours (GLH) is the time a Learner is being taught and assessed under the immediate guidance of a Trainer/Assessor, which for this qualification is 12 GLH (minimum), and
• The number of hours a Learner will reasonably be likely to spend in preparation and study, including assessment, as directed by, but not under the immediate guidance or supervision of a Trainer, e.g. precourse reading, which for this qualification is 2 hours
Class size maximum: 12 Learners (1 Trainer)
Validity: 3 years
Intended audience
This qualification is for ideal for people who work, or intend to work, in a role that involves assisting and moving people. It is suitable:
- As an introduction to those starting work which involves moving people
- For those returning to work where moving people is required
- As safety refresher training
Assessment:
- The practical Learning Outcomes are assessed by observation.
- Multi Choice Questions (MCQ) for theory and underpinning knowledge.
To Awarded this qualification the Learner must pass the assessments carried out by observation together with a percentage pass in the MCQ paper.

I have thought for days how to write this review… I have come to the conclusion that no words in the English dictionary can describe how grateful and thankful I am for the repatriation of my dad. The skills and professionalism of this team was outstanding; the constant updates and tracking information was very reassuring too. After having a few issues for 7 years getting my 94 year old grandmother the right care in her nursing home we decided to move her. As we were arranging this we were let down by another company.
I called BM and without hesitation they booked us straight in. The care and empathy & advice they had for me over the phone as I was getting upset about it all was so reassuring that my grandma was in the right hands. When they came to pick her up the two paramedics stepped in to help us as we were being ignored by the staff at the home about what we wanted.
The journey to her new nursing home was without fault and they waited patiently and were very kind as moving our grandma had been stressful before they arrived. They waited until both my grandma and us the family felt settled. I can’t praise them enough and I highly recommend them as a service.

I contacted B M Ambulance service from Spain on the internet regarding the repatriation of my partner following a severe stroke. I feel this company dealt with all aspects of this repatriation with sensitivity understanding and professionalism.
I had a number if phone calls and exchange of emails with them. They liaised with the Dr at the hospital in Spain and arranged an admission with my chosen hospital in the Uk. They inspired me with confidence and arrived at the appointed time at the Spanish hospital for the handover from the Dr in Spain.When transferred to the ambulance many tests were done to verify his ability to travel. I was updated throughout the journey and their location was available throughout via What’s App, and I was regularly messaged as to his condition. The whole journey took 27 hours and in that time I was able to fly back and be there at the UK hospital.
. He was monitored on the journey and I was delighted with how he had coped with his journey.. there had been two crews involved and. he was handed over to the Uk hospital in a very professional manner.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this company.

I recommend BM Ambulance Service very highly indeed. In the middle of the Covid pandemic, they managed to take a dear friend who had been seriously ill for months in France back to England and her family and friends.
They were efficient, helpful, and so friendly.

My parents had been safely repatriated to the UK
From the very first point of contact to the final online message that my parents had been safely repatriated to the UK the service and care was second to no one. The ease of administration, itemised quotation and payment options, absolutely everything was clear, easy and worked perfectly.
Repatriation from France to the UK in “normal” times would be difficult, but during a pandemic and the constant changing rules from both countries, the COVID-19 tests and border control paperwork was all handled including the care, hospitality, comfort and professionalism nothing was too much trouble.
They made two worried octogenarians, very at ease during a very frightening time – in fact they made the whole family very at ease, right down to being able to track the full journey door to door.
